Southwestern Australian Animals

The Book

Just Enough!

Written & illustrated by Steven Huynh

The narrative encourages students to take only what is needed (ACPPS006, ACPPS022 – Foundation to Year 2 Health and Physical Education), reinforcing fairness in sharing resources like classroom materials. It also explores the negative consequences of overuse by addressing the basic needs of animals—food, water, and shelter (ACSSU002 – Foundation Year Science) —demonstrating how overuse impacts wildlife and habitats. Highlighting environmental changes caused by resource depletion (ACSSU019 – Year 1 Science), fostering the awareness of sustainability. With its rich themes of sharing and environmental stewardship, this story inspires young learners to adopt mindful, responsible habits in their daily lives.

Learning Intentions

Curriculum Alignment

ACELA1437 8.4 (English Foundation): Understand the use of vocabulary in familiar contexts related to everyday experiences, personal interests and topics taught at school

• building vocabulary through multiple speaking and listening experiences
• discussing new vocabulary found in texts
• bringing vocabulary from personal experiences, relating this to new experiences and building a vocabulary for thinking and talking about school topics

ACELA1438 8.4 (English Foundation): Understand how to use knowledge of letters and sounds including onset and rime to spell words

• recognising the most common sound made by each letter of the alphabet, including consonants and short vowel sounds, for example ‘p-op’
• breaking words into onset and rime, noticing words that share the same pattern, for example ‘p-at’, ‘b-at’
• breaking words into onset and rime to learn how to spell words that share the same pattern, for example ‘p-at’, ‘b-at’, ‘t-all’ and ‘f-all’
• building word families using onset and rime, for example ‘h-ot’, ‘g-ot’, ‘n-ot’, ‘sh-ot’

ACELA1454 8.4 (English Year 1): Understand the use of vocabulary in everyday contexts as well as a growing number of school contexts, including appropriate use of formal and informal terms of address in different contexts

• learning forms of address for visitors and how to use language appropriately to ask directions and for information, for example on excursions

Instruction

Children will match the animals with their correct names and then colour in both the text and the animals.

Some pre-primaries may find this challenging if they can’t read yet. Teachers and parents can encourage them to sound out the words; the first few letter sounds may help them make a good guess.

If the task is too easy, you can challenge the children to draw the matching lines without crossing each other.
