Just Enough! by Steven Huynh Front Cover

Steven Huynh’s Just Enough! is set in the Southwestern Australian bush, Huynh emphasises the basic needs of all living things—such as food, water, air, and shelter—and teaches children the consequences of using these resources selfishly. Featuring adorable native animals like Emu, Kangaroo, Pelican, and Quokka…, the book shows how hoarding or overusing resources affects others, fostering a sense of empathy and responsibility in young readers.

The vibrant illustrations and relatable narrative spark children’s reflection on their own behaviours, particularly when it comes to sharing resources like toys and classroom materials. This encourages them to practise the “Just Enough!” philosophy in their daily lives, promoting respect, responsibility, and mindful decision-making. The story also subtly introduces the valuable tradition of Indigenous Australians, who take only what is needed from the land to ensure resources remain for future generations.

Link to the Australian Curriculum:

  • Health Year 1/2 (ACPPS022): The story aligns with Health outcomes by encouraging children to reflect on their choices regarding how their actions affect other students in the classroom, promoting a safe and active learning environment.
  • Science Foundation (ACSSU002): The book helps young learners understand the basic needs of living things, such as food, water, and shelter, and how these resources must be used wisely to maintain a healthy life.
  • Science Year 1 (ACSSU019): Just Enough! guides students through observable changes in the bush, showing how the greed of animals like Emu, Kangaroo, and Pelican affects their environment and impacts other animals’ survival. This teaches students how all living things depend on the sustainable use of resources.

With its engaging narrative and great morals, Just Enough! is an ideal learning resource for F-2 students, connecting seamlessly with the Australian Curriculum in Health, Science, and English.

Written & illustrated by Steven Huynh, published by Steven De GC

The narrative encourages students to take only what is needed (ACPPS006, ACPPS022 – Foundation to Year 2 Health and Physical Education), reinforcing fairness in sharing resources like classroom materials. It also explores the negative consequences of overuse by addressing the basic needs of animals—food, water, and shelter (ACSSU002 – Foundation Year Science) —demonstrating how overuse impacts wildlife and habitats. Highlighting environmental changes caused by resource depletion (ACSSU019 – Year 1 Science), fostering the awareness of sustainability. With its rich themes of sharing and environmental stewardship, this story inspires young learners to adopt mindful, responsible habits in their daily lives.
