The Shouting Girl: L9 Identifying Exclusion

The Book

The Shouting Girl

Written by Steven Huynh, illustrated by Gehenna Pham, published by Steven De GC

The story follows a young girl who struggles to express herself calmly, often shouting when she feels frustrated or unheard. Through her journey, she learns to recognise and understand her emotions (AC9HPFP03, AC9HP2P03 – Foundation to Year 2, Health and Physical Education) and works to develop positive strategies for expressing her thoughts and feelings in respectful ways (AC9HPFP02, AC9HP2P02 – Foundation to Year 2, Health and Physical Education).

The story also encourages children to explore characters’ perspectives and emotional responses, fostering empathy (AC9HP2P01 – Health and Physical Education, Years 1 and 2). It helps them define safe and unsafe environments, such as calm corners, through interactions with friends in a classroom, establishing help-seeking strategies in such situations (AC9HP2P05 – Health and Physical Education, Years 1 and 2).

With its poetic language and engaging illustrations, The Shouting Girl helps students understand how rhyme and rhythm create cohesion in a text. It also explores how words and images shape settings and characters, along with other literary features such as lists of three and similes.

Description

This lesson about identifying exclusion in play for children uses The Shouting Girl to explore bullying by exclusion at school. Students infer from Jim’s body language and actions, then reflect on how it feels to be left out. Through discussion, examples, and a hands-on worksheet, students learn about friend exclusion, respectful communication, and including others activities to support emotional wellbeing.

Learning Intentions

β€’ We are learning about exclusion in play through Jim.

Successful Criteria

β€’ I can identify Jim’s personality through his behaviour and facial expressions.
β€’ I can identify a situation where someone is excluded.
β€’ I can suggest ways for Jim to voice himself in a fair and respectful way.

Curriculum Alignment

AC9E2LA08 9.0 (English Language and Literacy Year 2): Understand that images add to or multiply the meanings of a text

β€’ identifying images and graphics in a text that add ideas or information not included in the written text; for example, a map or table in a factual text or an illustration in a story, which gives clues about the setting
β€’ identifying visual representations of characters’ actions, reactions, speech and thought processes in narratives, and considering how these images add to or multiply the meaning of accompanying words

AC9E2LY05 9.0 (English Language and Literacy Year 2): Use comprehension strategies such as visualising, predicting, connecting, summarising, monitoring and questioning to build literal and inferred meaning

β€’ listening for specific information and providing key facts or points from an informative or persuasive text
β€’ listening and responding to detailed instructions
β€’ integrating information from print, images and prior knowledge to make supportable inferences
β€’ identifying the main idea of a text
β€’ predicting vocabulary that is likely to be in a text, based on the topic and the purpose of the text; for example, predicting that β€œstation” and β€œarrive” would be in a text recounting a train journey
β€’ using prior knowledge to make and confirm predictions when reading a text
β€’ using graphic organisers to represent the connections between characters, order of events or sequence of information

AC9HP2P04 9.0 (Health and Physical Education Year 1, Year 2): Practise strategies they can use when they need to seek, give or deny permission respectfully

β€’Β practising strategies they can use when they need to giveβ€―or refuse consent; forβ€―example, saying yes and no in an assertiveβ€―manner, using non-verbal body cues and gestures
β€’Β practising ways to interact with others in a fair and respectful way in play and other activities, regardless of differences in gender, abilities, race or personality
β€’Β exploring situations where they need to seek, give or deny permission and practising strategies to assert themselves; for example, saying no to inappropriate touching

Instructions

Important Note to Teachers!

  • If you think the four pages before the last page (about parents arguing at home) are sensitive to your children, please gently skip them.
  • If you see them as an opportunity to discuss anger issues in adults (as adults are still learning too), please have ‘protective interrupting’ strategy in mind in case children tend to disclose information in front of the class.

Warm-up

  • Ask: β€œWhat made Jim cry and run to his safe space?”

Reading & Discussion

  • Read The Shouting Girl slowly in chunks until Jim ran into his safe space.
  • Confirm if students recall the event correctly.
  • Discuss:
    • Was it okay for Kim to yell at Jim and not to share the construction blocks?
    • Why didn’t he say anything to Kim when she yelled at him?
    • Do you think Jim could have done better in that situation?

Exclusion

  • Introduce the word β€˜exclude’ and ‘include’ and relate it to Kim’s actions.
  • Think how to put the words in a sentence.
  • Ask: “How does it feel to be excluded? Should we exclude someone?”
  • Go through examples and non-examples of exclusion, practise saying a full sentence with the words ‘excluded’ or ‘included’.
  • Return to the story: β€œWhat could Jim have done differently when Kim excluded him?”
  • Discuss fair and respectful ways to speak up and include yourself or Jim in play.

Activity – Exclusion Worksheet

  • Complete the exclusion worksheet with your strategies to help Jim deal with exclusion.

Extensions

  • Write/draw Jim a postcard to share your thoughts, cheer him up, or give advice about dealing with exclusion in a fair and respectful way. You can find the postcard template here.
  • Read other similar texts such as The Invisible Boy to understand more deeply about inclusion and exclusion.
