Exploring Magnificent Habitats with I See a Kookaburra

The Book

I See a Kookaburra!

Written by Steve Jenkins, illustrated by Robin Page, published by Houghton Mifflin Children

I See a Kookaburra! by Steve Jenkins & Robin Page is an engaging exploration of animal habitats around the world. Through detailed illustrations and informative text, children are invited to observe and identify different animals in their natural environments, from the Australian bush to the desert and jungle around the world.

This book supports young learners in recognising that living things have different external features and needs that help them survive (AC9SFU01 – Foundation Year, Science). It also encourages children to explore how different places provide the resources animals need to live and grow (AC9S1U01 – Year 1, Science).

With its interactive “seek-and-find” style and rich factual content, I See a Kookaburra! fosters curiosity and a deeper understanding of biodiversity and ecosystems.

Description

Students explore Australian habitats using the book I See a Kookaburra and match habitats to their correct names.

Learning Intentions

• I am learning different habitats found in Australia.

Successful Criteria

• I can name at least three Australian habitats.
• I can correctly match names to each habitat.
• I can explain what makes each habitat different.

Curriculum Alignment

AC9S1U01 9.0 (Science Year 1): Identify the basic needs of plants and animals, including air, water, food or shelter, and describe how the places they live meet those needs

• identifying the places where plants and animals live, including in our homes, local areas such as ponds, national parks, gardens or zoos
• identifying what they do to look after pets or plants at home and grouping these activities
• identifying and comparing the needs of a variety of plants and animals, including humans, based on their own experiences
• creating dioramas of a place a plant or animal lives, and identifying the features that enable it to meet its needs
• recognising how First Nations Australians care for living things
• exploring why caring for plants and animals is important including as sources of food and fibre

Materials

  • Picture cards of habitats
  • Book: I See a Kookaburra by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page
  • Habitat matching worksheet

Instructions

Warm-Up: What’s a Habitat?

  • Ask: “What is a habitat? Have you heard that word before?”
  • Explain: “A habitat is a special home where animals and plants live. Each habitat is different!”
  • Show illustrations of each habitat and ask what the children notice (e.g. trees, water, dryness)

Main Text: I See a Kookaburra

  • Read the book I See a Kookaburra aloud, stopping at key habitats
  • Ask: “What kind of place is this? What features can you see in this habitat?”
    • A savanna or grassland is an open space that has only few trees but a lot of grass.
    • Teacher note: Savanna is similar to grassland in Australia, Tide pool = rockpool, Pond = wetland
  • Optional: “Which animal do you see here?” (Note: Make this casual or skip, as it’s not the main focus)

Activity: Matching Habitats

  • Lay out habitat cards around the room or on tables
  • Students match each habitat to its name and describe the features
  • Discuss each one: e.g. “A rockpool is salty, found near the ocean, with blueish water.”
  • Students do their habitat matching worksheet.

Reflection

  • Ask: Which habitat looks fun or interesting to explore?
  • Which habitat is the driest? Which is the wettest?
  • Can we find more than one kind of water in different habitats?

Extensions

  • Students draw a habitat of their choice and write one sentence describing its features
  • Create a mini-book of habitats with pictures and feature labels
  • Set up a sensory corner with sand (desert), water tray (wetland), leaves (forest) to reinforce differences
